Studio Changes

2 May 2005 4 Comments

StudioI’ve made a few changes to the studio in the past several weeks, as you can see by the photo.

The first major change was to lose the 21" Sony monitor. I loved the resolution and the screen size, I just didn’t have the room for the old pig CRT on the desk anymore. It was all I could do to reach around it to the mixer and the laptop. I actually gave it to a friend when I bought a new 17" Samsung SyncMaster 712N flat panel. That almost completely cleared off the desk. It also allowed me to see both the desktop monitor and the laptop screen without dodging around. For the podcast, I use the laptop for all the music and effects, with the desktop capturing everything via Audacity. (Yeah … that’s Jim Edmonds wallpaper on the Ubuntu laptop. There are Cardinals everywhere in my space.)

Then, I got the mic off the desk with a Heil mic boom. That was an even bigger improvement. Now, I can push the mic up and out of the way, leaving plenty of room on the desktop.

All in all, it’s gotten pretty comfortable in The Roadhouse Studios.

Ubuntu?...It didn’t do that great on my new Sony Vaio S150 laptop…
Have you tried MEPIS yet?...I’m loving it…
Just make sure you press F3 when you boot and choose your preferred resolution before you click the “Install Me” button (a laptop issuue that might already be solved)...This is the most stable and pleasurable distro I’ve had so far…I’m pretty much clueless with the PodCast stuff, but I’ll get there…Just can’t keep up with you Tony…lol…Best Wishes, and of course,
    Shine On…

Hey, Mary. It’s good to see you around.

Actually, the Ubuntu install has changed since that picture was taken. The laptop is now running the latest and greatest Libranet, which I like very much. I had several annoying issues with Ubuntu, and had Libranet on the shelf, so it was out with one, in with the other.

Something annoying from both (and Fedora Core 3, as well) is the inability to get ndiswrapper configured to work consistently on the laptop. My WiFi card is a DLink DWL-650. Libranet provided the wlan and ndiswrapper tools and I loaded the Win drivers from the manufacturer. The system appears to see the card, but won’t actually bring up the wlan0 interface. It thinks it does – it shows as being up in the network tools – but it’s not actually up.

I really dislike leaving the laptop on the desktop …

Any good WiFi experience with Mepis?

Never had it so easy, even with my ipw2200…it’s DW600, on eth0…Yeah, I know, DW isn’t ideal, but if I keep insisting on living with my wildlife friends in the sticks, I might as well get used to it…I do miss my Charter Cable….The new Linksys Wireless-G AP with the built in booster is Heaven…I can roam anywhere in my reasonably large home and yard with an excellent link quality…never had it so good with a Linux distro and wireless…I’m sure you already know that MEPIS is based on Debian, heh, what more can you ask for?...lol…

P.S. all the CPUfreq modules are now automatically loaded at boot with latest MEPIS…you can easily install MEPIS from the live CD…like I said, just remember to boot into your preferred resolution (F3 at boot menu) before you click the “install me” button after logging in…If you happen to decide to try it, let me know how it goes….
