Smiling ‘Gator

If you’re a blues fan, you already know the reputation of Alligator Records. Founded in 1971 by Bruce Iglauer, it’s become the preeminent blues label in the US. Over the years, they’ve handled Koko Taylor, Son Seals, Marcia Ball, Johnny Copeland, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, Roy Buchanan, Tinsley Ellis, Mavis Staples, and far too many more artists to mention here. In short, they’ve had a hand in some of the greatest blues music recorded in the last 30 years.

You can now look forward to Alligator artists in The Roadhouse. Bruce and radio rep Tim Kolleth were kind enough to grant podcasting permissions to The Roadhouse this week.

Though you may be surprised, I’m not. My history with Alligator dates back to the early ‘80s when I was selling their music at retail. I’ve always admired and respected the approach they’ve taken with the music and with the artists. It comes as no surprise that they’d show this visionary interest in pushing the blues into the brave new world of podcasting.

You’ll hear a few Alligator artists in this week’s show, and probably at least one in each show over the next several months. You’ll also find iTunes links to the cuts and CDs played in each show. You’re an important part of these permissions. If you like what you hear of these great Alligator artists, spend the $.99 for the song, or purchase the CD from iTunes. Alligator and the other permission-granting labels need to know our strength and our dedication to supporting the blues.
