Nearly A Theme Song

31 January 2006 No Comment
The Johnny Jones opener for The Roadhouse 050 is about as close to a theme song as I’ve yet come.
“There’s a roadhouse down on south Highway 61.
You can feel the house rockin’ the closer you come
Because the blues is in the house …”
Iowa City is only about an hour west of Highway 61 – the famous “Blues Highway” – at Davenport. In Clarksdale, Mississippi, 61 intersects Highway 49, creating the famous crossroad at which Robert Johnson is rumored to have sold his soul to the devil. It continues north through St. Louis, a former home and the jumping-off point for many blues musicians migrating from the South in the 40s. It runs close to the Mississippi north of St. Louis and traverses the full width of Iowa from south to north, ending in Canada.

That line just killed me when I first heard it preparing for the show. If I was inclined to have a weekly theme song for The Roadhouse, this would be the one.
