The beauty of this version of “Texas Flood” is that he packs so much into it. And, it’s not just mindless wanking – everything makes perfect musical sense. The tear he goes on at 1:31 of the video is amazing. It drops my jaw every single time I see this. His touch, feel and sense of the moment in every song he played was unsurpassed.

I saw him only once, but in very unusual circumstances. He performed at the annual managers’ convention of the music company I was working for in 1984, The Record Bar. I saw him perform in the ballroom of the Hilton Head Marriott with 300 other store managers. I was sitting in a folding chair less than ten feet from the 1’ tall stage. My view of guitar players and guitar playing was changed forever.

I met him later in the evening during a meet-and-greet put on by Epic Records in a suite at the Marriott. We sat on the couch for about 45 minutes, talking about guitars and blues, while he nursed a bottle of Chivas. He was really the nicest guy you could imagine.

Sunday will be the 16th anniversary of his death.
