WOW! Talk about save the best for the last of the year Starting off with Koko is like lighting a firecracker. Then combine that with W.C. Clark you’ve got the mortars going off, followed by the exploding shells of Tommy Castro!!

Looking forward to hearing more from the Austin With Soul CD, especially “How Long is a Heartache,” a tune W.C. says he “owns.” Also the Tommy Castro take on “My Time After Awhile” was perhaps done with a little more musical finesse than Johnny Winter on his ‘69 release “Johnny Winter.” With your recent spin and comments on the ‘69 recording a few weeks ago it would be an interesting contrast to hear Johnny’s rendition.

    Keep up the good sounds!!

Thanks, Dave. The Koko cut really did set the tone for the show. I think I opened one last Christmas season with that same cut. She certainly pours every ounce into everything she does.

The Johnny Winter version of “My Time After Awhile” is on “Serious Business.” You’re right – the Tommy Castro version is a bit more finessed. The knock on that version when it came out (and on Tommy Castro, in general) was the SRV-like qualities of the guitar playing. While there are similarities, I really think that was just weak criticism. It’s easy to hear the similarities, but not so easy to hear Tommy’s mark around them. He’s gotten much better in subsequent releases at defining a sound that’s truly and completely his own.

And, the best cuts (IMO) from the ‘69 Johnny Winter release? “Leland, Mississippi” (for the over-the-top raucous slide playing), “Dallas” (the hard-assed lyrics and minimalism), “Be Careful With A Fool” (soulful and sweaty), and “Drown In My Own Tears” (the swelling gospel chorus in the background). Come to think of it—that’s about half the album!

Unfortunately, that’s on Columbia, now owned by Sony, one of the labels least likely to ever grant permissions to a podcaster.
