The Power of the Blues

25 August 2007 One Comment

Funny story.

I have a neighbor who likes to crank up his killer stereo on the weekends. He’s got great tastes in music, including funk, soul, reggae – so it’s not a bit deal to have it blasting through the neighborhood. In fact, it’s become one of the highlights of summer over the past few years.

This morning, I was outside taking a brief break from pulling together Roadhouse 132. His music was going – some great reggae cut that I didn’t recognize, but liked alot, followed by Parliament. It occurred to me that he might like The Roadhouse and I decided to drop off a disc for him after I got the show put together for this week.

Later, I knocked on his door, disc in hand, but didn’t get any answer. So, I left the disc of Roadhouse 132 just inside his front door – sort of a fun anonymous little gift to a neighbor.

About an hour later, as I finished mowing my lawn, I heard my own voice booming through the neighborhood. My neighbor had The Roadhouse cranked. As the Bernard Allison premium cut from this week’s show played through, I heard him singing along with the chorus at the top of his lungs. Pretty good voice, too.

Now, a couple of hours later, The Roadhouse 132 is booming through the neighborhood, in its entirety, for at least the second time. I stood out on the driveway a bit ago just to take it in. At one point, he greeted a female friend who’d pulled up, looked over in my direction and saw me in the driveway. I was certain he’d know where the CD came from (the “little blue house on the wetlands in beautiful Iowa City, IA” reference), but he gave no indication that he knew. He just smiled and waved as he always does, then moved on. I smiled and waved back, even more giddy that he had no idea.

And, the lady across the circle, pulling weeds from around the buried power box – waving her foot in time with the music.

Delivering great music by hand, anonymously. Too much fun …
