This is a little tidbit about the opening tune of Roadhouse no. 289 For Pete’s Sake by Downchild.

The tune most likely refers to Pete Johnson (and Albert Ammonds) and it is payed by Jane Vasey, who was my friend. She played with Downchild Blues Band from 1973 till her death from leukemia in 1982. I knew her even before she joined Downchild. She was the most talented musician in the band, an amazing, classically trained blues piano player, a wonderful person and stunningly beautiful lady. I still miss her after all these years and I know everyone who knew her still misses her as well.

Thanks, Tom. I’m sure your friend would appreciate the recognition and kind words. I can only say that as a blues fan, I really find her piano voice to be unique and pretty stunning.

There was a memorial concert and a find raiser for the Jane Vasey fund in Toronto couple of years ago, which I missed and I am deeply sorry that I missed it.

I think Downchild should release an album of tunes featuring Jane Vasey’s stunning piano and donate the proceeds to the Jane Vasey fund.

For some reason I keep comparing her to Honey Piazza’s amazing piano playing and Honey once told me that someone has mentioned it before.

I forgot to tell you how pleased I was to hear your inclusion of her tune in The Roadhouse. Another one I love is called “Tryin’ to Keep Her 88’s Straight”.

    thanks Tony
